FAQ's

Who started Baker Hill?

The Baker Hill Golf Club was started in 1998 by five dedicated golfers who recognized the need for a first-class private equity golf Club in the New London/Sunapee region. These five, and twenty-one additional founders provided the initial funding for the Club.

Does Baker Hill have tennis or swimming?

No. Baker Hill is not a country club. It is devoted solely to golf.

Where is the course located?

The Baker Hill Golf Club is located in the Upper Valley, on 260 acres of land  in Newbury, New Hampshire. The hillside setting provides spectacular views of surrounding mountains and Lake Sunapee. The area is well known as a popular  4-season recrational area.  Nearby towns include:  New London, Hanover and Concord, New Hampshire.  It is also close to I-89, and only 1 1/2 hours from Boston.

What are the outstanding features of the golf course?

The course is challenging yet fair. It is a "strategic" rather than a "target" golf course, which follows the natural contours of the land. Rees Jones believes in allowing the golfer to see the intended target and visualize the shot. He has designed the course so that there are no blind shots and no hidden obstacles. The course has seven sets of tees to accommodate golfers of varying skills. The novice will find the course to be extremely playable and enjoyable, while the low handicap player will find it a true test of golf.

How long is the course?

The course has seven sets of tees to accommodate golfers of varying skills.  From the most forward tees the course is about 4400 yards and from the gold tees or tips about 7200 yards.

Will homes be built on the golf course?

No homes or condominiums will be built on the golf course. The secluded, wooded setting is one of the great assets of Baker Hill. With no noise or visual distractions, a round of golf at Baker Hill is a tranquil experience, a real escape from the pressures of everyday life.
Does the Club have tee times?

No. At Baker Hill, golfers can play whenever they choose. The Club is limited to 225 memberships to avoid the need for tee times.

Who is the Golf Pro?

Mark Ashton. A graduate of the University of Vermont, Mark pursued a career in business before deciding to become a golf professional. He has become well known in the area for his teaching skills, and golfers of all abilities have benefited from his instruction. Before coming to Baker Hill, Mark was the assistant pro at the Myopia Hunt Club in South Hamilton, Massachusetts, and the John's Island Club in Vero Beach, FL.  Mark currently serves as the Head Golf Professional, Director of Golf and General Manager.

Can beginning golfers join the club?

Yes. Beginners are very welcome. The club has instituted a popular clinic for beginners and those who are returning to the game after a long layoff. These clinics include instruction on the practice range as well as playing lessons on the golf course.

What are the practice facilities like? Is there an extra charge for use of the range?

Baker Hill has an excellent two-tiered driving range with five “target” greens and a large putting green. The club also has a separate short game practice area with two bunkers and a green for chipping and pitching. There is no extra charge for use of the practice facilities; it is included with the dues.

Do you have a Clubhouse and Pro Shop?

Over the winter of 2002-2003, a historic barn on the property was renovated to serve as the pro shop, and a Timberpeg clubhouse was constructed to meet the needs of the membership. The Clubhouse site provides panoramic views of the mountains, the lake, and the starting and finishing holes of the front and back nines. The Clubhouse has locker room facilities, kitchen, dining area, Tavern, snack bar, and a porch and wrap-around deck for gathering after golf.

What is the Club's policy on walking?

Walking is encouraged at Baker Hill, and golfers may walk at all times. Courtesy carts are available to assist golfers on a lengthy walk between the 11th, 12th and 13th holes and a short but steep climb after the 18th hole. Baker Hill has a fleet of golf carts that may be rented daily or annually.
